Response Journal Topics
Below are ideas for journal response topics for this unit! Journal Template
- Take a field trip around the city (or the school would work) using a map, have the students record in their journals everything that they learned or needed to use on their journey and what for, ex. Key, map, directions.
- Take the students on a field trip through a grocery store using a map (directions to different isles, foods, etc.) Then have the students respond in their journals about the trip.
- Have a speaker or teacher talk about their travels around the world and then the children can reflect on it in a journal. Have them include whether or not they have or want to travel to the same places.
- Have the children listen to and compare two teachers talking about their travels to the same place and their experiences from that place. Make sure the students include in the journal whether or not they have been there or want to go there.
- Have the students interview a parent or friend about what they think the advantages of having maps is, then have them write about the interview and their reaction to it
- Watch the video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NazvXwWumaQ all about maps, and write in your journals about what you liked, what you learned, and questions you might still have.
- Interview an elder (60 or older) and compare all of the places they have traveled to a person between the ages of 18 and 25, what do you notice? Have they traveled anywhere that you would want to go in the future? Reflect in your journals.
